Young Edgar went to live with John Allan, a rich tradesman, in Richmond, Virginia, while his elder brother William Henry and half-sister Rosalie were placed in separate families.

The Allans treated Edgar as a son and paid for his private school education, but disagreement emerged between Edgar and his guardians during his adolescence over his literary ambitions. Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia but received minimal financial assistance from John Allan and was barred from returning after Allan refused to help him pay off his large gambling debts.

Poe was deeply affected by Virginia’s death. Poe was devastated for several months after her death. A friend said of him, “The loss of his wife was a sad blow to him. He did not seem to care, after she was gone, whether he lived an hour, a day, a week or a year; she was his all.”[84] A year after her death, he wrote to a friend that he had experienced the greatest evil a man can suffer when, he said, “a wife, whom I loved as no man ever loved before”, had fallen ill.

Poe resorted to drinking after a long period of abstinence. How much and how often he drank is a contentious question that has been contested both during Poe’s lifetime and by subsequent biographers.
